Due to their superior fire detection ability, codes have been changing across the country to require the use of photoelectric alarms. Regardless of code though, the NFPA – and Smoke Alert – highly recommend the use of Photoelectric smoke alarms whenever possible.

Dual-Sensor Smoke Detectors attempt to blend the two previously discussed technologies – they utilize both ionization and photoelectric detection mechanisms. This unique integration attempted to offer an inclusive solution, while meeting varying building codes that require one technology or the other.
The downside of a the dual-sensor smoke detector is that while the idea was to blend the best of both sensors, you also receive the worst of each. Specifically, ionization alarms are know to false alarm far more often than photoelectric. This downside exists in the dual-sensor alarm the same as it does in the ionization alarm.

The photoelectric sensor is renowned for its ability to detect these types of fire events quickly and efficiently, with very few false alarms. In fact, it’s because of this that most building codes across the country are now requiring photoelectric alarms to be installed in all new construction and renovated homes.
